Open Access Policy

Emergent Life Sciences Research (ELSR) is an open access journal committed to making scientific research freely and immediately available to readers worldwide.

ELSR supports the broad dissemination, accessibility, visibility, and responsible reuse of scholarly research.

All articles published in ELSR are made available online without subscription or reader-access charges and are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).

The journal's open access model is intended to support the exchange of scientific knowledge and facilitate the use of research by researchers, students, educators, institutions, policymakers, and the wider scientific community.

 

1. Open Access Principle

ELSR provides open access to its published scholarly content.

Readers may access published articles without:

  • A journal subscription.
  • Institutional subscription access.
  • Individual article purchase.
  • Pay-per-view payment.
  • Reader registration solely for article access.

The full text of published articles is made openly available through the journal's publication platform.

ELSR considers accessibility to scientific knowledge an important component of responsible scholarly communication.

 

2. Immediate Open Access

Articles published in ELSR are made openly accessible upon publication.

ELSR does not normally apply an embargo period to the final published article.

Readers may access the Version of Record when it is published and made available through the journal platform.

Immediate open access supports timely communication of research findings and facilitates scientific exchange.

 

3. Reader Access

ELSR does not charge readers for access to published articles.

Readers may freely:

  • View published articles.
  • Read the full text.
  • Download available article files.
  • Save copies for lawful use.
  • Share article links.
  • Access supplementary material made publicly available with the article.

Access to published scholarly content is not dependent on institutional affiliation.

ELSR aims to make its published research accessible to the international scientific community.

 

4. Creative Commons Licensing

All articles published in ELSR are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).

The official terms of the license are available from Creative Commons CC BY 4.0.

CC BY 4.0 permits sharing and adaptation of licensed material, including for commercial purposes, provided that appropriate attribution is given, a link to the license is provided, and changes are indicated where applicable.

5. Author-Retained Copyright

Authors retain copyright in their articles published in ELSR.

By publishing with ELSR, authors grant the journal, published by Emergent Research Publications (ERP), non-exclusive publishing rights in accordance with the ELSR Copyright & Licensing Policy and the applicable publication agreement.

The open access status of an article does not transfer copyright ownership from the authors to ELSR.

The finalized ELSR publication agreement follows this author-retained copyright and non-exclusive publishing-rights model.

 

6. Reuse of Published Articles

Published ELSR articles may be reused in accordance with CC BY 4.0.

Permitted reuse may include:

  • Copying.
  • Redistribution.
  • Translation.
  • Adaptation.
  • Educational use.
  • Scholarly reuse.
  • Inclusion in teaching materials.
  • Use in reviews and scientific analyses.
  • Commercial reuse.

Users are responsible for complying with the attribution and other applicable conditions of the license.

Reuse should not falsely imply endorsement by the original authors, ELSR, its Editors, Editorial Board, or Publisher.

 

7. Attribution

Users reusing ELSR content should provide appropriate credit to the original work.

Attribution should identify, where reasonably possible:

  • The original author or authors.
  • The article title.
  • Emergent Life Sciences Research as the publication source.
  • The DOI or appropriate article link.
  • The applicable CC BY 4.0 license.
  • Whether changes were made.

Attribution should be provided in a reasonable manner appropriate to the form of reuse.

8. Access to the Version of Record

ELSR makes the final published article, or Version of Record, openly accessible through the journal's publication platform.

The Version of Record is the article that has completed the journal's editorial, peer-review, acceptance, and publication process.

Where a published article is corrected, updated through a formal notice, subject to an Expression of Concern, or retracted, the relevant post-publication information should be linked to the Version of Record.

The open availability of an article does not prevent ELSR from taking necessary post-publication editorial action.

 

9. Self-Archiving

ELSR supports author self-archiving.

Authors may deposit the final published article in appropriate repositories or scholarly systems.

These may include:

  • Institutional repositories.
  • Subject repositories.
  • Funder-designated repositories.
  • University research-information systems.
  • Other appropriate scholarly repositories.

ELSR does not normally impose an embargo period on the self-archiving of the final published article.

Authors are encouraged to identify ELSR as the original publication source and include the DOI or link to the Version of Record.

 

10. Author and Institutional Websites

Authors may make their published ELSR articles available through personal, professional, or institutional webpages.

Authors are encouraged to:

  • Identify the article as published in ELSR.
  • Include the article DOI.
  • Link to the Version of Record.
  • Preserve the CC BY 4.0 licensing information.

Sharing should be consistent with the applicable license and should not misrepresent the published article.

 

11. Preprints

ELSR permits submission of manuscripts that have previously been posted on recognized non-commercial preprint servers, subject to the journal's Preprint Policy.

A preprint is not the Version of Record.

After publication, authors are encouraged to update the preprint record with the DOI or link to the final published ELSR article.

Preprint availability does not alter the open access status or licensing terms of the final ELSR publication.

 

12. Open Access and Article Processing Charges

Open access refers to the accessibility and reuse conditions of published scholarly content.

Article Processing Charges (APCs), where applicable, relate to the journal's publication funding model.

The presence, absence, or waiver of an APC does not change the open access status of an article published in ELSR.

All published ELSR articles are made openly accessible under the applicable journal license.

Current charges, waivers, and payment conditions are described separately in the ELSR Article Processing Charges (APC) Policy.

This distinction is important because the current Guide for Authors separately defines the APC waiver and future standard charges; those financial arrangements should not be confused with the journal's open access licensing model.

 

13. No Reader Access Charges

ELSR does not charge readers to access the full text of published articles.

The journal does not operate a subscription paywall for published scholarly articles.

Readers are not required to purchase individual articles to access published research.

ELSR may provide additional website functions, services, or communication features, but such functions should not restrict normal open access to published articles.

 

14. Access Without Institutional Affiliation

Published ELSR articles are accessible regardless of the reader's institutional affiliation.

Access is not limited to:

  • University members.
  • Library subscribers.
  • Research institutions.
  • Professional societies.
  • Paid members.

Independent researchers, students, educators, practitioners, and other readers may access published content under the same open access conditions.

 

15. Open Access to Supplementary Material

Supplementary material published with an ELSR article may be made openly available with the article.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that supplementary material is appropriate for public dissemination.

Supplementary material should not contain confidential, restricted, or unlawfully disclosed information.

Where supplementary material is subject to a separate license or access condition, this should be clearly indicated.

ELSR may restrict access to specific material where necessary to protect:

  • Participant confidentiality.
  • Personal data.
  • Ethical obligations.
  • Legal restrictions.
  • Intellectual property rights.
  • Third-party rights.

 

16. Research Data and Open Access

ELSR encourages responsible research-data availability and transparent reporting.

Open access to an article does not automatically require all underlying research data to be publicly accessible without restriction.

Data availability may depend on:

  • Participant confidentiality.
  • Informed consent.
  • Data protection requirements.
  • Ethical approval conditions.
  • Institutional policies.
  • Legal restrictions.
  • Intellectual property considerations.
  • Legitimate security or biosecurity concerns.

17. Third-Party Material

Third-party material included in an open access article may not always be covered by the article's CC BY 4.0 license.

Where material is subject to different copyright or licensing conditions, this should be indicated through an appropriate credit line or notice.

Users are responsible for determining whether separate permission is required for reuse of excluded third-party material.

18. Machine-Based Access and Scholarly Discovery

ELSR supports the discoverability and responsible use of published research through scholarly information systems.

Article metadata may be made available to:

  • Indexing and abstracting services.
  • Cross-referencing systems.
  • Library discovery services.
  • Scholarly databases.
  • Research-information systems.
  • Repository services.
  • Other appropriate academic discovery platforms.

Where technically and legally appropriate, open scholarly content may be used for computational research, text and data analysis, and machine-based scholarly discovery in accordance with applicable licenses and rights.

 

19. Accessibility and Article Availability

ELSR seeks to maintain reliable access to published scholarly content.

The journal may update its publication platform, website structure, file formats, or technical systems to improve access and preservation.

Temporary technical interruptions do not alter the open access status of published articles.

Where article locations or publication systems change, ELSR should seek to maintain persistent identification and appropriate access to the Version of Record.

 

20. Long-Term Access and Preservation

ELSR recognizes the importance of continued access to the scholarly record.

The journal may use appropriate archiving, preservation, repository, DOI, and publication-infrastructure services to support long-term availability of published articles.

Changes to the journal website or publishing platform should not intentionally remove legitimate access to the published scholarly record.

Where preservation arrangements are expanded or modified, ELSR may update its technical and preservation information accordingly.

 

21. Corrections, Expressions of Concern, and Retractions

Open access applies to the scholarly record, including relevant post-publication notices.

Where an article requires a formal correction, Expression of Concern, or retraction, ELSR should make the relevant notice openly accessible.

The original article and post-publication notice may remain linked where appropriate to preserve the transparency of the scientific record.

Post-publication action is governed by the ELSR Corrections & Retractions Policy.

 

22. Open Access and Editorial Independence

The open access publication model does not affect editorial decision-making.

Editorial decisions are based on scientific, editorial, and ethical considerations.

The ability of an author to pay an APC, where charges apply, should not determine whether a manuscript is accepted for publication.

Editors and reviewers should evaluate manuscripts independently of publication-payment arrangements.

The ELSR editorial workflow requires manuscripts to complete editorial and peer-review assessment before acceptance.

 

23. Open Access and Publication Ethics

Open access does not reduce the scientific or ethical standards required for publication.

All manuscripts remain subject to the journal's:

  • Editorial assessment.
  • Peer-review process.
  • Publication ethics requirements.
  • Authorship requirements.
  • Plagiarism requirements.
  • AI and Generative AI Policy.
  • Research-data requirements.
  • Other applicable journal policies.

ELSR may reject, correct, or retract content when necessary to protect the integrity of the scientific record.

 

24. Open Access Policy Oversight

The Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Office are responsible for overseeing the implementation of this Open Access Policy.

ELSR may review and update its open access procedures to reflect developments in scholarly communication, publishing infrastructure, repository practices, and open research.

Any changes to the journal's open access procedures should be communicated transparently and should remain consistent with the license applied to published articles.

All published ELSR articles are made freely and immediately accessible under the open access conditions applicable to the article.
